Haiti Medical Mission Trip 2013

I had the opportunity and pleasure to travel to Haiti and serve the people there in order to bring medical care as well as spiritual healing through the gospel of Jesus Christ.  I'd like to extend my thanks and gratitude for all who assisted in taking care of the physical needs left behind here in Lima, as well as, lifting up the trip and myself in prayer.

Haiti is on an island that is shared by the Dominican Republic located in the Caribbean.  The population of Haiti is approximately 10 to 12,000,000 people. Half of those people are under the age of 18. The country is the second poorest country in the Americas. The per capita income is $660 a year. 78% of Haitians make approximately 2 dollars a day. The life expectancy of this country is 61 years of age. And most people do not have regular jobs. It was said by locals that the unemployment rate is up to near 90%. Education is scarce as only 50% of the population attends school and most of them drop out before the sixth grade. Private school is more prominent than public school as the government sets up public education and it can only be obtained through a testing process in which they take the top testing students. So if school wants to be attended and you do not meet the requirements of the government then private school is the only other means. This sets up a difficult circumstance and tragedy for this poor population of people on this Caribbean island that is such a beautiful setting with beautiful people but limited resources.

I had the honor of joining community a medical team from United Methodist Church led by Pastor Brian Bucher and Dr. Eric Stallkamp.  The team consisted of 19 individual’s: laypersons, nurses, and paramedics, physician’s assistants, a dentist, and physicians.  During the trip we were able to see approximately 150 patients per day and a total of 500 patients. There were many different problems treated. The problems consisted of things like injuries and infections to severe high blood pressure and diabetes. The people were very grateful for the care that they received.  We were limited in some of the treatments that we could do but were able to touch lives in both physical and spiritual ways. Having the opportunity to touch people physically in order to reach them spiritually with the gospel of Jesus Christ is such a honor and privilege. The team that went on this trip was unified and I enjoyed meeting and working with everybody involved. My thanks goes out to Brian Bucher of Community United Methodist Church, Dr. Eric Stallkamp for his leadership and everyone involved by working together to serve the Haitian people.
